Rustic Home State Picture Frame Holder

Happy Friday guys!  I’ve got a super fun project to share with you today, the Wayfair Great Craft Swap!  Wayfair gathered a handful of their Homemaker bloggers, had them choose between four items (a tablecloth, a cutting board, a photo frame, or a set of hand towels), paired us up, then had us send our item to our secret blogger partner.  We all got to make then receive a fun craft via snail mail (good ‘ol snail mail!).  It’s like a crafty September Secret Santa.

Using a simple frame from Wayfair, this blogger made an adorable and rustic home state photo frame holder then mailed it to a fellow blogger as part of the #WayfairCraftSwap! (ignore the clamp and purple-ish piece in this pic, I didn’t use them)

I enlarged my state printout to about the size I needed, but ended up tracing it a little bigger to fit the piece better.   Then, I just painted outside the state in plain white latex paint. I drilled my holes in the top plank before painting.  When the paint was dry, I sanded the edges and lightly over the paint with my sander to reveal some of the wood.  I wiped all the dust off then put a coat of stain over each piece, wiping it off the paint as much as I could.  I love this technique (found it at Thrifty & Chic) and it’s so easy to do!

I joined pairs of planks together with wood glue, then let it sit with books on top of it until all the wood glue dried (I was going to use that clamp for this, but decided not to).

To reinforce it, I added a couple 12″ poplar battens to the back with little screws just to be safe.

Instead of permanently attaching the frame, I used a nail so that they could take it off easily to insert photos and also could change out the frame as they desired.  I strung some rope through the holes and knotted it, then it was ready to hang!

I loved the way this piece came out!!! I think it would be really cute in a seafoam or turquoise color too.
